Last season the plant was Carly Smithson and this season it is Joanna Pacitti. While Joanna isn’t officially on the Top 50 list yet, you can be sure she will be.

Below is one of her songs. What do you think? Is she Top 50 bound? Would you vote for her?

If you want to read more about Joanna vist mjsbigblog. She has written a great post today about her. But make sure you come back here and comment.

FYI : “Circus” written by Joanna was just covered by Britney Spears.

I think that you can either sing or not sing? correct me if I am wrong. I say If she is good and the industry wasnt there for her then let the public decide if she is good enough to be their american idol. Yes carrie underwood is GREAT she was a nobody in the industry and guess what she beat the people with a lot of experience, So like i said if you can sing then sing and make america love you.
This girl had a shot, the industry did not fail her, she has been a broadway star and had a record deal. She has been coached and managed by pro”s since childhood. You do don”t put a nascar in a horse race do you? would that be fair to the horses? Sorry but I just cannot turn a blind eye to what I believe is right and wrong. How do you think these kids feel that drive 500 miles and wait 2 days living in their cars feel about a pro getting shuffled to the front of the line. I hope A I staff reads this post and takes it to heart. This hanky panky is a bunch of bull $#*t and needs to stop now!

    Well put
Well, I think she could have won in Season 5 or 6…I had no problems with Carly, Michael, Kristy or David A but this young woman has charted on Billboard. That is a whole different kettle of fish. That said, if she makes the top 12, Let America decide.
Based on the Stage 46 story, I should have said: let the writers decide. If Stage 46 is right this girl has no chance unless she makes for really good television.

I’ve read more about Joanna and now her story is all coming back to me. I totally remember the Annie on Broadway debacle and how she won a contest sponsered by Macy’s that was played out on tv (kind of like the Grease casting competition). She won the part and played it for a few months, then they replaced her when she got bronchitis instead of wating until she was over it and could take the roll back. I remember she was really good at age 12. The recording in the video above does sound just like any other 20-yr old pop singer, as Joe Cool & Amy both said.

Hey Doc, half of the female pop vocalists working today need to learn to sing from the diaphragm.
I do agree with Lee, AI is starting to lose it’s original intent by what is now being perceived as actively pursuing known talent. Are the recruiting them? No one knows. If they are, then the show is no longer true to it’s original concept. While that is sad, if the show does produce legitimate talent and we do in fact buy their music, then maybe it is a success after all. Yes, I wish everyone traveled the road of Carrie Underwood, but maybe those days are gone.
Hey Slim.. I guess it must be old news and apparently I was sleeping under a rock, but I didn’t know Carly was a plant. Are you saying she didn’t have to try out and was just put on the show?

    I did not know that.
She tried out and went the same route as everyone else. Did they plan all along to make her top 12? Probably expected it but, as we saw, they couldn’t control it after that and I would argue she was actually put on to divert the haters and give Simon someone to pick on to cross up the haters.

  9. Dr. Electro says:

She reminds me of Hilary Duff but with a less powerful voice. She has a similar look in spite of the dark hair. I’ve heard something of hers on Yahoo Launchcast plus but I can’t remember it and can no longer find it.

I don’t think I would spend money on her songs. If she sounds better than the other singers I will vote for her. She needs to learn proper breath control and how to sing from the diaphragm.

  10. ABB says:

I’m going to join the pooper crowd. Just sing. But I do agree with Joe Cool – she sounds like any other teen star.

  11. Joyce says:
American Idol is about finding undiscovered talent. IMHO having a previous recording contract as did Carly and Joanna should make them ineligible for American Idol.

But the rules of Idol state you just can currently have a recording contract.
Ok, so by “plant”, you don’t mean Carly was placed on the show without having to audition like everyone else?? That’s how I originally took it, but now I think you mean she did audition, and was allowed on the show despite her past record deal. Am I understanding you correctly?

Either way, I couldn’t give a rat’s butt. I’m with Angie – just let them sing for me. I don’t care about the controversies behind the scenes. Guess I’m a pooper too. He’s a pooper, She’s a pooper, we’re a pooper, wouldn’t you like to be a pooper too?
Eh, I have no comment. I think I talked about the whole “plant” thing a bunch last year.

As for me, I don’t listen to stuff or look at the spoilers ahead of time. (before the season starts) but once it starts I do look for song spoilers but that’s about it.
party pooper

  15. CB says:

You can read about Carly’s prior musical career at:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carly_Hennessy

To me the most troubling part is she & Randy worked at the same label at the same time.

I agree with Lee – nothing is better than a good Horatio Alger story

  16. Lee says:

The appeal of AI is the concept of the American dream come true. That is to see some obscure American that never had a shot at a record deal get a chance to compete for one for the very first time in their life. To go from a zero to a hero is what we all tune in to watch, an underdog come out on top.
Like Carrie who only sang to the cows and chickens on her remote farm.
That’s what I want and that is all this show was originally supposed to represent. If they keep this B.S. up they need to change the name or give us what we want to see, and that is ammature”s not paid career professionals.

  17. rachel says:

She certainly can sing !! Beautiful !

Wow. I didn’t know that either.

  19. Joe Cool says:

She is wonderful. She is pretty, she sings really good, and she has recorded. Once you went “Pro” per se, you shouldn’t qualify for American Idol. To me she sounds like any other teen star.

  20. CB says:

A plant is a plant is a plant.

This is NOT what AI is about IMO. At a certain point some is just too professional. Carly crossed that line for me last year & this girl is waaaaaaaaay over it. 2 record deals? #31 on Billboard? Brittany covered her song?

    Come on…..
